Hend Abdelhalim Asks “Man Ana?” — A New Voice in Modern Standard Arabic

With “Man Ana?” (“Who Am I?”), Hend Abdelhalim enters a more introspective and experimental chapter of her musical journey. Released on YouTube and across streaming platforms, the new single and its accompanying music video explore identity, emotion and the contradictions of the human experience through the language of Modern Standard Arabic, set against a contemporary electronic soundscape.

More than a conventional music video, “Man Ana?” unfolds as a visual and sonic exploration of the self. At its core is an inner dialogue — one that moves between strength and surrender, doubt and certainty, vulnerability and resilience. Through the song, Abdelhalim poses a series of questions around desire, happiness and what it means to search for a sense of safety within oneself.

“Man Ana? is a visual experience that goes beyond the traditional music video format,” says Abdelhalim, reflecting the project’s ambition to merge music, performance and visual storytelling into one cohesive artistic statement.

The track was created in collaboration with music producer and DJ Mo Amer, drawing on electronic music while allowing Abdelhalim’s vocal identity to take centre stage. The decision to perform the song in Modern Standard Arabic came organically during the creative process, after Amer suggested that the language could offer a deeper and more precise expression of the song’s meaning.

“Man Ana? is based on electronic music, drawing on my artistic vision alongside Mo Amer’s expertise in DJ and electronic music production,” Abdelhalim explains. “The idea kept coming back to me, until Mo Amer suggested using Modern Standard Arabic to better express its meanings.”

The visual world of the music video further amplifies the song’s introspective nature. Shot against the Egyptian desert, Abdelhalim embraces a vivid yet grounded aesthetic, creating a contrast between the vastness of the landscape and the deeply personal questions at the heart of the track.
